Few hotels in Amsterdam make an entrance like this one. The Conservatorium fills a grand Neo-Gothic landmark on Paulus Potterstraat that once trained the city's young musicians, and Mandarin Oriental has reshaped it into a calm, contemporary retreat. The old brick courtyard now sits under a soaring glass roof, a light-filled atrium where guests linger over coffee, cocktails or afternoon tea.
The 129 rooms and suites pair the original architecture with clean modern lines. Think tall arched windows, dark timber beams in the suites under the roof, and duplex lofts where the bed sits on a mezzanine above a lounge. Bathrooms are wrapped in warm stone, several with a freestanding tub placed beneath a window.
Below ground, the Akasha wellness centre has an indoor pool lit in electric blue, a hammam, a sauna and a well-equipped gym, plus treatments such as Watsu in the water. Two restaurants and a buzzing bar keep the ground floor lively from breakfast until late.
The video takes you from the atrium up to the suites. Step outside and the Van Gogh Museum is barely three minutes away on foot, with the Rijksmuseum, the Concertgebouw and the boutiques of P.C. Hooftstraat all close at hand.

Amsterdam, Netherlands.
Amsterdam is a compact city of canals, gabled houses and bicycles, easy to explore on foot, by tram or from the water. The hotel stands in the Museum Quarter in Amsterdam Oud-Zuid, a leafy and elegant district just south of the canal ring.
Museumplein is around the corner, home to the Van Gogh Museum, the Rijksmuseum, the Stedelijk Museum and the Concertgebouw concert hall. Vondelpark is a short stroll for a morning run or a picnic, and the shops of P.C. Hooftstraat and Van Baerlestraat start at the door. Trams from nearby stops reach Leidseplein, the Nine Streets and Centraal Station within minutes, and Schiphol airport is roughly a 25 minute drive.
What guests say.

Guests rave about the building itself, a historic conservatory turned into a sleek and atmospheric hotel, and about the location next to the big museums, the luxury shops and a tram stop. The staff earn frequent praise for warm, personal attention, and the spa with its hammam and sauna gets high marks, as does the generous breakfast. On the downside, some visitors find the lobby noisy, the upper floors less impressive than the rest, and housekeeping and in-room technology not always at the level the price suggests.
