Few Amsterdam hotels sit as close to the water as Tivoli Doelen. The seventeenth-century building, with its carved sandstone front and domed corner tower, rises right at the bend of the Amstel, and many rooms look out over the river or a canal. Ask for one with a balcony: guests say it is the part of the stay they remember most.
History runs through the house. Rembrandt's Night Watch once hung here before it moved to the Rijksmuseum, and the Beatles stayed in the building during their Dutch tour. The rooms are calmer than that past suggests, with dark wood panelling, coffered ceilings, crisp white beds, Nespresso machines and bright marble bathrooms with double basins.
Mornings start in an airy dining room by the windows, where the buffet is joined by an à la carte menu that returning guests rate highly. In the evening, Omber serves art-inspired cooking in a warm room facing the water, and room service runs around the clock.
Step outside and the Munt tower, the floating flower market and Rembrandtplein are a few minutes away on foot, while the Rijksmuseum is an easy stroll further south.

Amsterdam, Netherlands.
Amsterdam fits canals, museums and centuries of trading history into a compact centre that is best explored on foot, by bike or from a boat. Tivoli Doelen sits in the middle of it, near Muntplein and the Amstel, with tram stops a short walk from the door.
The Rijksmuseum and Museumplein are about twenty minutes away on foot and the Anne Frank House roughly two kilometres. The Nine Streets, Waterlooplein market and the Jewish Cultural Quarter are all close by, and Schiphol Airport is a short train ride from Centraal Station.
What guests say.
From guest reviews, checked October 2026.Guests are close to unanimous about the location and the staff: porters, guest relations and the breakfast team are named again and again, and the canal-view rooms with balconies draw the warmest praise. Breakfast, especially the à la carte dishes, is a clear favourite, and Omber is mostly well liked, though one guest found an expensive main course slow and disappointing. The honest downside is the age of the building: some reviewers mention worn carpets, rooms that feel dated for the price, and a long wait for early check-in.
