Tucked into a cobbled lane in the City of London, Vintry and Mercer stands beside St James Garlickhythe, a church rebuilt by Christopher Wren, and on a quiet day you can hear its bells from your room. The hotel borrows its name from the old Vintry ward and the merchant trades that once filled this corner near the Thames, and the interiors play with that past through bold wallpaper, rich colours and a touch of brass.
Rooms feel snug and well thought out, with plush beds, green tiled bathrooms, free soft drinks and a tray for tea and coffee. The upgraded categories bring floor to ceiling windows, and some come with their own terrace or balcony. Room service is available day and night.
Much of the life of the hotel happens over food and drink. There is a relaxed eatery, an intimate cocktail bar, and the Mercer Roof Terrace, where you eat and drink with the rooftops of the City all around you. The themed afternoon teas, from magic to circus, have a following of their own.
A small gym, a glamorous lobby lounge and meeting rooms round things off. It is a calm, characterful base for a weekend in the City, and the video shows why so many guests return.

London, United Kingdom.
The City of London is the old Square Mile, busy with office life on weekdays and surprisingly peaceful at weekends. From Garlick Hill it is a two minute walk to Mansion House station on the District and Circle lines, and about seven minutes on foot to St Paul's Cathedral.
The Thames path is just below the hotel. Cross the Millennium Bridge for Tate Modern and Shakespeare's Globe, or walk over London Bridge to the food stalls of Borough Market. London City Airport is the closest airport, and Heathrow is easy to reach on the Elizabeth line from nearby Liverpool Street or Farringdon.
What guests say.
From guest reviews, checked October 2026.4.8/5
9.4/10
Guests are close to unanimous about the staff, with reception and the door team praised for going out of their way, from birthday upgrades to carrying luggage up without being asked. Comfortable beds and quiet rooms come up again and again, as does the handy spot near Mansion House and the river. The rooftop bar and restaurant are popular, which is also the catch: the terrace can get crowded, and one diner described slow, careless service there. Standard rooms are on the small side, and the streets around are quiet rather than lively at night.
Read on Google“Loved the location, proximity to the tube, and quiet street. Beds are heavenly.”
Read on Google“Hearing the church bells from our room was so lovely, and the location made it easy to walk to London Bridge and explore the area.”
Read on Google“Check-in was smooth and friendly, and having two solid bars/restaurants in the building is a great bonus.”
