The Londoner

London, United Kingdom

The Londoner stands on Leicester Square, in the middle of the West End, and it plays the part with obvious pleasure. Behind a pale stone front with deep blue window frames and a Union Jack above the door, a lobby with a giant golden sun, a fireplace and velvet sofas sets a theatrical tone for the 350 rooms and suites above.

The video and the gallery move through a hotel made for evenings. The Stage in the lobby has live music, Joshua's Tavern glows under copper pipework, The Green House wraps guests in curved velvet banquettes, and high above the square 8 at The Londoner offers a fire pit and a view toward the London Eye. Whitcomb's is the main restaurant and the place for breakfast, while staying guests also have The Residence, a private lounge with drinks and snacks.

Rooms are calm and tailored, in soft greys and warm wood, with dark blue tiled bathrooms, a Nespresso machine and a smart TV. Higher categories look out across the rooftops of central London. For a slower moment there is a spa with an indoor pool and a well equipped gym, a welcome pause after a day among the crowds of Soho and Covent Garden.

Guests are full of praise for the staff, often naming individual people at reception, at the door and in The Residence, the private lounge for hotel guests that many describe as a highlight. The location on Leicester Square is called ideal for theatre, shopping and sightseeing, and the bold, playful design wins fans. Rooms feel quiet and comfortable, some with views over Nelson's Column. On the downside, several reviewers find the standard rooms on the small side, and one guest felt the daily service charge should be explained before checkout.
