Facing Kensington Gardens, The Milestone Hotel and Residences fills a red brick Victorian building dating from 1883, its gables and bay windows glowing warmly once the sun goes down. Part of the Red Carnation collection, it feels less like a large hotel and more like a grand private townhouse, with antiques, oil paintings and rich patterned fabrics in almost every corner.
No two rooms are decorated the same way. Some suites have a balcony or a separate sitting room, a few look straight out over the park, and certain rooms are spread across two levels. Bathrooms come in polished black and white marble with deep tubs, and room service is available at any hour.
Eating and drinking are a big part of the appeal. Breakfast and dinner are served in a wood panelled dining room, afternoon tea arrives on tiered silver stands in the lounge and conservatory, and the Stables bar, all leather chairs and dark wood, draws Londoners as well as guests. Downstairs you will find a spa, a gym and an indoor pool lined in green stone.
What guests remember most is the staff: a concierge who tracks down sold out concert seats, a doorman who knows everyone by name. The video above offers a short look at the facade, the lounges and the bar.

London, United Kingdom.
Kensington is one of the greenest and most elegant corners of central London. Kensington Gardens and Kensington Palace lie just across the road, and a stroll through the park leads into Hyde Park and on towards Knightsbridge.
The Royal Albert Hall is a short walk away, as are the big museums of South Kensington, including the Victoria and Albert Museum and the Natural History Museum. Kensington High Street has plenty of shops, Notting Hill Gate station is under a mile north, and Buckingham Palace is roughly two miles east. Heathrow is the closest major airport.
What guests say.

Guests rate The Milestone highly above all for its staff, who are praised for remembering names, anticipating requests and pulling off small miracles, from wedding receptions to hard to find theatre tickets. Afternoon tea gets warm words, especially for how well it handles dietary needs, and the Stables bar is a popular spot for an evening drink. The individually styled, antique filled rooms are described as comfortable and quiet. On the downside, the style is firmly traditional and ornate, so travellers who prefer a sleek, modern look may find it heavy.
