Behind a stately Dutch Classicist facade on Oudezijds Voorburgwal, Sofitel Legend The Grand Amsterdam fills a building whose story reaches back to 1411. Over the centuries it has changed roles more than once, and the hotel runs a short history tour for guests who want to hear how. You arrive through a cobbled forecourt, and the lobby beyond feels more like a grand private house than a busy city hotel.
Rooms are intimate and rich in colour, with walk-in showers, Nespresso machines and soft carpets, while the suites bring butler service and, in a few cases, a private hammam or a full kitchen with dining room. The leafy inner garden is a quiet green pocket hidden from the canal outside.
Food and drink are a big part of the stay. There is a classic bistro, a highly rated seafood restaurant, a wine bar, a traditional brown cafe, a cocktail bar and a cigar lounge, and breakfast gets steady praise from guests. Elsewhere, a spa on two levels holds an indoor pool, sauna, steam room and gym.
Step outside and the Royal Palace on Dam Square is about five minutes away on foot, with the Anne Frank House a little further. The lively Red Light District starts next door, yet the hotel's own stretch of canal stays fairly calm.

Amsterdam, Netherlands.
Amsterdam is a compact city of canals, gabled houses and bridges, best explored on foot or by bike. The medieval heart around Dam Square holds the Royal Palace, the Nieuwe Kerk and a maze of narrow lanes lined with cafes, shops and small galleries.
From the old centre it is an easy walk west to the Jordaan and the Anne Frank House, or south to the Museum Quarter with the Rijksmuseum and the Van Gogh Museum. Canal boats leave from many points nearby, and Amsterdam Centraal station, with fast trains to Schiphol airport, is roughly fifteen minutes away on foot.
What guests say.
From guest reviews, checked October 2026.4.7/5
4.7/5
Guests praise the staff above all, from butlers and concierges who pull off hard reservations to small gestures for children. The breakfast, the historic building and the central position also come up again and again. On the downside, some rooms feel dated or a little cramped for a five-star hotel, a few guests report lapses in housekeeping, and canal-facing rooms can pick up street noise late at night from the nearby nightlife area.
