Tall windows, blue velvet seating and a candle chandelier in a lounge at the InterContinental Amstel Hotel

InterContinental Amstel Hotel

Amsterdam, Netherlands

This stately 19th-century building sits right on the Amstel, a short stroll from the canal ring yet far enough from the crowds to feel calm. Inside, the mood is classic and polished, with chandeliers, heavy drapes and tall windows that frame the river and the boats gliding past.

Rooms and suites lean into traditional elegance: blue toile wallpaper, antique-style furniture and marble bathrooms where a deep tub invites a long soak. Many look straight out over the water, others over the rooftops of the city. Ask for a river view if you can, because waking up to the Amstel is half the charm.

Downstairs, the wellness floor is a real surprise for a city address. An indoor heated pool stretches beneath a painted sky ceiling, joined by a sauna, a steam room, a whirlpool and a fitness centre.

Food and drink are taken seriously here. There is a formal restaurant, a more relaxed brasserie and a lounge, while the bar opens onto a riverside terrace that fills up on summer evenings. Guests keep coming back to the generous breakfast and to staff who greet them by name.

Weesperplein metro station is about two minutes away on foot, so the big museums and the old centre are easy to reach whenever you feel like leaving this riverside cocoon.

Destination info

Amsterdam, Netherlands.

Amsterdam packs centuries of trade, art and canal life into a compact, walkable city. The hotel stands on the Amstel just southeast of the historic core, close to the Magere Brug and the Royal Theatre Carré, with the lively cafes of De Pijp a short walk to the south.

The Van Gogh Museum and the Rijksmuseum area lie around two kilometres away, and the Anne Frank House is roughly three. Trams and the metro from nearby Weesperplein make hopping between neighbourhoods simple, though a bike or a canal boat is the most local way to explore. Schiphol Airport is about half an hour away by train or taxi.

Guests describe a grand, peaceful hotel where the staff stand out most: warm, attentive and quick to remember names. Breakfast with a view of the river gets frequent praise, as do the comfortable beds, spotless rooms and the handy metro stop nearby. The bar and the riverside terrace are popular with locals too, and that is where the criticism lies. Some guests felt service outside was slow in the evening or that visitors were given equal footing with hotel guests, and walk-ins hoping for afternoon tea were turned away without an alternative.
