Hotel de la Ville occupies an eighteenth century palazzo on Via Sistina, just above the top of the Spanish Steps. Rocco Forte Hotels has given the old building a confident, colourful personality, and the images here show it well: a sheltered courtyard garden ringed by terracotta walls, salons painted saffron and filled with green velvet, and windows that frame the domes and rooftops of the historic centre.
Rooms run from refined doubles to a suite with its own private lift, a living room and terraces. Marble bathrooms, patterned floors and tall windows are the common thread, while the colours shift from deep teal to warm gold from one room to the next. Guests regularly praise how cool the rooms stay in a Roman summer and how discreetly housekeeping goes about its work.
There are two restaurants and two bars. Café Ginori is the easygoing daytime spot, and Cielo, the rooftop bar, is where the city glows at sunset over a cocktail. Downstairs, the spa has a dimly lit pool, treatments with Irene Forte products and a gym with yoga and personal training.
This is a place for travellers who like to explore on foot: Piazza di Spagna, Villa Borghese and Palazzo Barberini are all a short stroll away, yet the courtyard feels pleasantly removed from the crowds.

Rome, Italy.
Rome needs little introduction, but the corner around Hotel de la Ville is one of its most rewarding. Via Sistina runs from Trinità dei Monti towards Piazza Barberini, so the church at the head of the Spanish Steps is a few minutes from the door, and the designer streets of the Tridente, Via Condotti among them, unfold at the bottom of the stairs.
Climb the other way and the Pincio terrace opens onto Villa Borghese, the great park that hides the Galleria Borghese and its Bernini sculptures. Palazzo Barberini, home to the National Gallery of Ancient Art, is about seven minutes on foot, and the Trevi Fountain and the Pantheon are easy walks further on.
Rome Fiumicino Leonardo da Vinci Airport lies roughly 32 kilometres southwest of the hotel, usually 45 minutes to an hour by car depending on traffic.
What guests say.
From guest reviews, checked October 2026.4.8/5
9.4/10
Guests are close to unanimous about the staff, describing a team that remembers preferences, anticipates small needs and keeps a discreet, warm tone. The location at the top of the Spanish Steps, the rooftop bar views and a calm, well run spa come up again and again, as do spacious, cool rooms and a generous breakfast. The weak spot is the concierge desk under pressure: one guest reported transport bookings that were confirmed but never arranged, leading to missed dinner reservations, although the hotel did cover part of the cost.
