Baglioni Hotel Regina - Rome

Rome, Italy

Baglioni Hotel Regina occupies a grand stone palazzo on Via Vittorio Veneto, the curving avenue that defined Roman glamour in the years of la dolce vita. Arrive at dusk and the facade glows under the plane trees, lamps lit on every balcony, which is exactly how the hotel likes to introduce itself on video.

Inside, the mood is unashamedly classic. Salons are dressed in crimson and gold, with crystal chandeliers, painted panels and chequered marble underfoot. Guest rooms lean calmer, in cream and soft grey, and the bathrooms are clad in Italian marble. The larger suites add terraces with views over the rooftops, separate living areas and a butler, and the Roman Penthouse Suite gets a video of its own.

Several guests describe mornings that begin with breakfast to the sound of a harp and evenings that end with live music in the bar. There is a refined Italian restaurant, a gilded café for coffee between sights, and a spa where a Jacuzzi sits beneath tall bamboo-patterned screens, alongside a Turkish bath and a gym.

The real luxury, though, is the address. Villa Borghese is a few minutes on foot, and the Spanish Steps, Via Condotti and the Trevi Fountain are an easy stroll downhill.

Rome, Italy.

Rome needs little introduction, but where you stay shapes the trip. Via Veneto lies in the Ludovisi quarter, a calm and elegant corner of the historic centre just inside the Aurelian Walls, lined with grand hotels, embassies and pavement cafés.

Walk north and you reach Villa Borghese, the city's great park and home of the Galleria Borghese with its Bernini sculptures. Head south and the Spanish Steps, the boutiques of Via Condotti and the Trevi Fountain are all within roughly 15 minutes on foot, while the Colosseum is about 3 km away. Barberini metro station on line A is close by for longer hops, and Rome Fiumicino Airport (FCO) is around 45 minutes by car.

Guests are close to unanimous about the staff: front desk, porters and concierge are praised for their warmth and for arranging tours, transfers and dinner tables. Breakfast with live harp music, evening music in the bar and the central spot on Via Veneto also come up again and again. The honest caveat concerns the rooms. A few reviewers found their room or bathroom dated, and one guest describes worn corridors, a lift out of service and a small superior room facing a noisy inner courtyard, so it is worth asking where your room is.
