Andaz Amsterdam Prinsengracht, by Hyatt

Amsterdam, Netherlands

Andaz Amsterdam Prinsengracht sits on one of the most photographed canals in the city, in a building that once housed the Amsterdam public library and connects to older canal houses. From the water it looks like a row of classic gabled facades. Step inside and the mood turns playful, with oversized lamps, bold colours and fish motifs that nod to the Dutch seafaring past.

The rooms carry the same spirit. Expect crisp white beds, big prints of fish and spoons on the walls, sculpted armchairs and, in many rooms, a freestanding tub or a bathroom that opens straight into the sleeping area. Ask for a canal or garden view, since those rooms get the best daylight. Snacks from the minibar are included.

Downstairs you find a busy restaurant, a bar where guests gather for gin tastings in the evening, a small video art gallery and a calm spa with a sauna. Behind the building lies a hidden garden full of herbs and flowers, a quiet place between city walks. Dogs are welcome as well, with their own bed and bowl.

The video on this page takes you along the canal and into the rooms, so you can get a feel for the place before you go.

Destination info

Amsterdam, Netherlands.

Amsterdam is a compact city of canals, gabled houses and bicycles, and the Prinsengracht is one of its three main canal rings. The hotel stands on the southern part of that ring, right at the edge of the Jordaan, a former working class quarter now full of small galleries, brown cafes and independent shops.

Dam Square is about a kilometre away, and the Anne Frank House, the Van Gogh Museum and the Rijksmuseum are all within an easy walk or a short tram ride. The busy squares around Leidseplein are close for an evening out. Amsterdam Airport Schiphol (AMS) is roughly half an hour away by train or taxi.

Guests rate this canal hotel highly, mostly for the staff, who are described as warm, attentive and quick to sort out small requests. The location on the Prinsengracht, close to the Jordaan and within walking distance of most sights, gets constant praise, as do the bar, the breakfast and the comfortable beds. Many enjoy the quirky design. The honest drawback is the room layout: sinks and sometimes the shower sit inside the bedroom, which offers little privacy, and interior rooms can feel dark. Prices are on the high side.

“Service was over the top amazing. We felt spoiled. Room service food was good and decently priced for room service.”
