Caruso stands at the top of Ravello, in a palace whose oldest walls date from the eleventh century, some 350 metres above the Gulf of Salerno. You reach it through a small piazza beside the church of San Giovanni del Toro. Inside, one space opens into the next: vaulted halls with restored frescoes, Gothic arches that frame the coast, and terraced gardens of roses, lemons and olive trees stepping down towards the sea.
There are around fifty rooms and suites, and each has its own shape. Floors are terracotta or hand-painted majolica, walls are pale yellow or white, and many rooms have a balcony or a garden terrace facing the water.
The infinity pool sits at the top of the gardens. In the late afternoon the line between the pool and the gulf all but disappears, and lunch is served beside it under scalloped parasols. In the evening, Il Pantaleone cooks the food of Campania with the coast below, and Bar Caruso mixes drinks with local citrus beneath painted ceilings.
Ravello is a town of lanes and steps rather than roads. Villa Rufolo and Villa Cimbrone are a short walk away, and Amalfi, where the boats leave for the coast, is a short drive down the hill.

Amalfi Coast, Italy.
Ravello sits on a ridge high above the Amalfi Coast: a small town of steep lanes, walled gardens and a twelfth-century cathedral on its main square. Two villas are worth the walk. Villa Rufolo has gardens that hang over the gulf and a stage where the Ravello Festival holds concerts each summer. Villa Cimbrone ends at the Terrace of Infinity, a row of marble busts with nothing but sea and sky beyond.
Amalfi is about fifteen minutes away by road and Positano around an hour. From the harbour at Amalfi, boats run along the cliffs and across to Capri. Naples International Airport is roughly 65 kilometres away, about an hour and a quarter by car.
What guests say.
From guest reviews, checked October 2026.Reviewers return again and again to the infinity pool and the view it frames over the Amalfi Coast, and to the quiet of Ravello, high above the crowds of Positano and Amalfi. Dinner at Caruso Grill, breakfast in a room overlooking the water and the gardens come up often, as do the free extras such as a boat trip along the coast and a pasta class. Many describe staff who remember the small things. Criticism is rare; the practical drawback follows from the setting, as the beaches, the ferries and the waterfront towns are a shuttle or boat ride below.
