Saint James Paris

Paris, France

Behind a gate on a quiet square in the 16th arrondissement, Saint James Paris feels less like a city hotel and more like a country house that somehow landed a short walk from the Arc de Triomphe. The chateau dates from 1892, and its gravel courtyard, fountain and clipped hedges set the tone before you even reach the door.

Inside, the mood is theatrical yet warm. A grand staircase climbs beneath a skylight, the library bar is lined with old books, and no two rooms look alike, with painted wallpapers, deep colours and marble bathrooms. Some open straight onto the garden, which in spring and summer becomes the heart of the house.

Dining is taken seriously here. Bellefeuille holds a Michelin star, while a sunroom and a relaxed terrace cover lighter meals or a long coffee under the trees. Downstairs, the spa pairs a calm indoor pool with a steam room and treatment rooms, and the gym has had a recent upgrade.

The hotel belongs to Relais & Châteaux and also runs as a private club, which explains its hushed, residential feel. Our video takes you past the facade, through the gardens and into the rooms, so you can see why guests keep calling it a hidden retreat in the middle of Paris.

Destination info

Paris, France.

Saint James Paris sits in the residential 16th arrondissement, on the western side of the city. The Arc de Triomphe is about 1.5 km away and the Eiffel Tower roughly 1.9 km, so the big sights are within an easy walk or a short taxi ride, yet the streets around the hotel stay calm and leafy.

The neighbourhood is known for its grand boulevards, elegant apartment blocks and museums around Trocadéro, and the green expanse of the Bois de Boulogne lies just to the west for a morning run or a lazy afternoon. Paris Charles de Gaulle (CDG) is the main airport for international arrivals, with Orly as the second option to the south.

Guests mostly talk about the people: staff who remember names, plan birthdays and organise whole itineraries without fuss. The chateau setting, the original interiors and the hidden garden come up again and again, as do the spa, the bar and the Michelin-starred dinners at Bellefeuille. Not everything lands perfectly, though. One guest found a receptionist cold toward international visitors and wanted a better late-night room service menu, and a recent stay was marred by worn towels and a reported theft from the room.
